Welcome to our Bologna & Beyond Photography Tour. On this 4 day and 3 night photography tour we will be exploring the stunning city of Bologna along with some of the surrounding areas and towns, including castles and vineyards.
Bologna is the capital city of the Emilia-Romagna region in northern Italy. It is known for its rich history, beautiful architecture, and vibrant cultural scene. Bologna has a long and fascinating history, dating back to ancient times. It was an important center during the Roman Empire and later became a thriving medieval city. The University of Bologna, founded in 1088, is one of the oldest universities in the world. Bologna boasts a well-preserved historic city center with beautiful buildings and squares. The Piazza Maggiore is the main square, surrounded by notable structures such as the Basilica di San Petronio and the Palazzo Comunale. Bologna is famous for its extensive network of porticos, which have recently been dedicated as a new UNESCO world heritage site, covered walkways that line many of the city's streets. These porticos provide shade and protection from the weather and are a distinctive feature of Bologna's urban landscape. Bologna is also renowned for its delicious cuisine, particularly its pasta dishes.

Throughout this tour we will explore both Bologna and the surrounding areas. We will head over to Dozza a small and picturesque village known for its charming medieval architecture, the Rocca Sforzesca (Sforza Castle), and its unique outdoor art project known as the "Biennale del Muro Dipinto" (Biennial of the Painted Wall). We will visit The Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca, an important religious site located on Colle della Guardia, a hill just outside Bologna, Italy. While a road now leads up to the sanctuary, a portico, known as the "Portico di San Luca," is a unique architectural feature that connects the sanctuary on the hill to the city below. The portico has 666 arches and provides a covered walkway for pilgrims and visitors making their way to the sanctuary. From the hill, there are panoramic views of the city of Bologna and the surrounding countryside, offering a picturesque setting for the sanctuary.
We will then head out of Bologna and explore further afield. We will discover extremely photographic ravines and hills, and take some time to explore small medieval villages, historic abbeys along with impressive castles. Places we may visit include Abbazia di Monteveglio, Castello di Serravalle and Rocca di Vignola. Tours are available if the group would like. Another unique place nearby Bologna is Rocchetta Mattei. Mr Mattei was an eccentric man who built an even more eccentric castle and it is possible to visit and take a tour.
We also have the option to explore the Modena province where there are both beautiful landscapes to capture as well as charming urban environments. The city of Modena is the provincial capital and is famous for its historical and cultural heritage. It is known for its well-preserved medieval architecture, including the UNESCO-listed Modena Cathedral, Ghirlandina Tower, and Piazza Grande. Modena province is part of the Motor Valley, an area known for its association with luxury and sports car manufacturers as well as being the birthplace of Enzo Ferrari. Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, and Pagani all have their headquarters or manufacturing facilities in or near Modena.
We can also explore Castelvetro di Modena, a charming town situated on the hills of Modena, offering scenic views of the surrounding countryside. The town is known for its picturesque landscapes and vineyards. The historic centre features narrow streets, stone buildings, and a medieval castle, which is a prominent landmark. The Rocca (castle) of Castelvetro is a significant historical site. It dates back to the 10th century and has undergone various renovations over the centuries. Castelvetro di Modena is part of the region known for producing traditional balsamic vinegar. The town is surrounded by vineyards, and the local balsamic vinegar is highly regarded for its quality and authenticity.
